Life's little Mysteries...

I am being a lush today.. lying in bed a la Barbara Cartland style..
I think I once read that she spent the mornings in bed.. writing her torrid romances ..Well there is no-one here to inspire romance today, my boys having departed long ago to their respective schools for the day.. so after the initial flurry of activity at dawn I have retreated to my boudoir to gaze out at the soggy scene below and indulge myself in a little writing..
Today I have time on my side and no deadlines to meet... bliss! I would like to indulge in some of my own projects, a box frame idea that has been nudging me, or... I could just stay put and spend the day pondering and getting bed sores!! No.. not my style.. I am a restless creature and must obey the demands of the day even if that just means hoovering the cat..

Whilst on that subject..

Do you ever wonder at life's little mysteries..I certainly do and here are a few that crop up far too often..

1. Hoovering...

Why is it that when I have a fit of domesticity, pursuing every speck of fluff and crumb with my super turbo charged hoover around the room, unplugging, coiling the flex and standing back to admire my pristine floor.. I turn round to find a belligerent feather or piece of cotton in the middle of the floor... without fail!

2. Time...

Why is it that I fall into a deep, log inspired slumber on weekdays, waking in a complete fug when the alarm shouts at me at the obscene hour of 5.30 a.m.
On Saturdays and Sundays, days of rest, I wake 'PING' at 5.30 a.m sharp without the need for bells or irritating disc jockeys!

3. Postmen...

Why is it that I wait in all day for the Postie to deliver a much awaited parcel and the second I chance a breath of fresh air in the garden.. I return indoors to find that the Postie has left his calling card.. Aaaargh!

4. Snails...

Why is it that we can re-locate our community of slugs and snails from the garden, taking them by car to a local beauty spot to live out their happy retirement in new pastures.. and within days (it seems) they have returned.. No postcard either!

5. Birds...

Why do birds suddenly appear.....? Ha! ... cue the music

6. Shopping ...
Why is it that we do our weekly pilgrimage to the supemarket every weekend to stock up the larder and by the middle of the week we are left with a tin of chick peas and an out of date yoghurt...?

One last thing..

Why did the sun have to go away?

Answers on a postcard please....

Hi Michele
I would send my answers on a postcard, but a) I don't have any, spending most of my life asking myself the very same questions and b) If I sent the answers the postie would probably deliver them while you're out anyway!
Hope you're being a lush, surrounded by chocolate, out of date yogurt and the odd chick pea or two.
Enjoy! Lovely, lovely post!

Now I really thought all the snails were camping out in my garden this morning!

So many of those apply to me, especially that damned post man. Turning up at 4pm with a parcel?! I tell you.

Enjoy your time in bed.

Hi Michele,

It's sunny and bright here, but flippin' freezing! You are so lucky ending up with Chickpeas, all I get is as mouldy tomato in the bottom of the fridge! Postie always comes when we are out, so I don't even bother to think about that now. And as for snails... well not snails so much as the ones without houses, slugs... YUK

Have a fabulous day doing just what you want. I didn't get dressed until midday, just couldn't be bothered!

Rosiex ps, thanks for the comment!

Murphy's law? Whatever can go wrong will go wrong and at the worst possible time. Or I like this version which I found at wiki. "I never had a slice of bread, Particularly large and wide, That did not fall upon the floor, And always on the buttered side."

I cycled through that rain this morning wearing jeans, by the time I got home my legs felt like lead!
We too have the ubiquitous tin of chick peas, but I always have at least 3 tins of sardines too, so at least if we are ever housebound we will still maintain our high intelligence levels with all that omega 3!
I love the little girl with the hoover!

You didn't get the storm then? It lasted 5 hours, last night.. and it was pretty scary too.

I'd make the most of it whilst your boys are away ;-) Sal

What a great list of mysteries. All so true! I'm most definitely with you on the waking up one. My alarm goes at 6 and I find it such a struggle to get up, particularly since Simon doesn't need to be up until 7.30!! But on the weekend I wake without an alarm around 7 and can never get back to sleep so lie there listening to my dearest snoring next to me for a couple of hours as he seems to have no problem sleeping whatever the day of the week!
Wishing the sun would come back too!

Did you spend your morning in bed? I cannot imagine someone with your energy to while away the time under the covers.

Did your parcel arrive? Did Little Miss Henny Penny make it abroad? Do tell!

Sweet post, Michelle. I am sitting here in my den and listening to the air conditioner drone on. It looks benign outside - sun shining, mild breeze...but when you walk out - SMACKYA in the face with hot 100 degree weather. I'd take soggy anytime.

Maddening, all of these things are sent to REALLY try us! You're very good re-homing the slithering ones, I admit to resorting to organic measures to see them off. My "why" is, why do I feel warmer to snails than I do to slugs? Must be the homemaker in me, I love the idea of them carrying their house around on their backs!
Hope you had a fabulous lie-in. Shame its gone all soggy with you but the plants will love it (still dry here after 10 days - unbelievable and my arms are in agony from carrying the watering can - hose pipe on the way though).
Have a smashing weekend,
Stephx

so it was you who delivered the snail that attacked me as I opened the shed door in the dark? That one definatly did NOT return to your garden, infact it has been everywhere with me since, on the bottom of my shoe.

Lovely post!

With Bodie in the midst of his summer moult and the house on the market I seem to be seeing more of the hoover than the children at the minute! We have pinto beans instead of chickpeas lingering in the cupboard - we all love chickpeas so they don't last. Not sure if I will ever use pinto beans for anything!
Hope you enjoyed your lazy morning.

Lucky you to be a lush today!!! I wake up at 4:30AM each morning, though not by choice. Lately I have an unsolicited alarm going off in my head that wakes me up (it is probably due to the woodpecker who has been knocking at our window trim in the wee hours)! heehee

I hope you have a beautiful weekend!

It is most unusual to hear of you going at snails pace Michele, must be because you have no rocket fuel left in your cupboards. Another damp day today, your little girl without any clothes on is going to catch a chill before long. x

Hi! What a lovely post and those pictures are inspiring too. I like it when somebody just writes that she has spend some time in bed. I did too this week, but I called it a jet leg.
Mmmm I suffer from most but not all your why's. I have already written a tribute to our mailman Wim, who leaves behind his phone number, when you are 15 seconds in the garden while he is ringing the door bell. And I have one answer for you too: I think the sun has to go away, because we appreciate it better when it turnes up now and again than if it was always here. Thought you might now my answer quickly so I didn't write it on a postcard...
Have a nice weekend!

Hi Michele,
Yes why has the Sun gone away! well at least I can get on with all things that I should have done indoors indead of pottering around in my garden!
I can agree with you on so many of these Mysteries.
Hope you are a good weekend resting...

Hi Michele - I've just stumbled upon your blog nd I love your garden posts. I am a gardener as well but the weather is much better in England for such things. Although I am in "New England" I don't have the same luck with my plants that I had when I lived in London. Not to mention the deer that think my back yard is their salad buffet!

Those are some very deep questions that do require much pondering, but alas, are always answerless. I have asked myself those questions many times as well. Especially the one about the alarm clock. That one irks me weekendly.

But I guess we have to ask ourselves, what would life be without these things? Would it still be good? Or would it just be filled with some other nuance at which we would ask questions? Deep.

I think...the answer to every single one of your questions is....

p.s. send me a pic of your lovely kitchen so i can post it on my Open House of Kitchens next Mon/!!

What an amazingly lovely post Michele - I loved it.....
So do YOU go in for a bit of naked vacuuming too?! Aghhhh! I probably sound like some internet stalker now....but I just thought it was funny to see that little dolly in just her shoes and socks, pushing the hoover around! Sorry to lower the tone,
Love to you,
